Calvary Baptist Academy was opened in 1969 as an elementary school. Over the years, they have grown to average about 750 students in grades K-12 as well as have added a day care.
Rhonda Honea began her career at Calvary in 1981 as a middle school math teacher. She taught until 1996 at which time she became the Assistant Principal and then moved up to Principal in 2000.
At Calvary, Church and School are intertwined. The school auditorium is used for chapel every week and then prepped for the weekend activities. Calvary exists to reach students spiritually and academically and have really stepped up in two areas lately. The first being in technology. 95% of ALL classrooms now have a SMART Board. SMART boards are a sophisticated replacement of the traditional overhead projector. Over the years, this cutting-edge technology has proved popular for students of all ages. The interactive board turns a typical classroom into a fun learning environment. It enriches classrooms in several ways by providing hands on collaboration and creating the perfect learning setting.
The second area in which they really excel is in what is called the CAV’s Club, their parent organization. The Club continually works to assist with school fundraising to help keep tuition costs down. Last year, they raised $40,000 at their auction and the majority of those monies go to assist the teachers with their needs. They’re a very active group and appreciate assistance from the local community.
